With 8 regional service centers and over 20 outreach centers, the OCIE SBDC provides business owners and entrepreneurs the opportunity to learn and expand upon their business knowledge through various trainings and workshops. Consulting services and training programs are generally offered at little to no cost to the client.
Here’s how the SBDC works
SBDC consulting services are free
Our consulting services are offered at absolutely no cost to clients thanks to partial funding from the U.S. Small Business Administration, the California Governor’s Office of Business and Economic Development (GO-Biz), and our eight host institutions including our network host, California State University, Fullerton.
All consulting services at the SBDC are confidential and designed to fit the specific needs of every client. Our SBDC staff members and consultants adhere to strict confidentiality policies and procedures in accordance with SBDC accreditation standards.
Our consultants are paid and experienced
Consultants at the SBDC are compensated through the organizations funding. They are collectively experienced in a variety of business specialties, functional areas, and industries. If you would like more information about our staff and consultants, view our staff page.
Training opportunities are offered at a nominal fee or at no cost
The great thing about our training opportunities is that they are widely accessible to our community often being offered at no cost or a nominal fee. Every SBDC center manages their location’s training programs and pricing, therefore program cost and availability vary from center to center.
We provide our clients access to our extensive network
Through our years of experience helping small businesses, we have built an extensive network of partners, which includes service providers, public agencies, and non-profits. We make these additional resources available to our clients to help them reach their goals.
The OCIE SBDC network team celebrates the success of our clients through coordinated grand openings and ribbon-cutting events for our brick and mortar retail clients. These events are highlighted across local press, social media, and email outreach as SBDC “success stories” at no cost to clients. Our “success stories” offer an opportunity for our clients to obtain greater publicity and demonstrate the wonderful entrepreneurial spirit of Southern California.

So you’ve signed up for services,
here’s what next
Your first appointment
In the first appointment, our SBDC consultants will review your business needs with you to determine what action items must be taken. Furthermore, a scope of work will be drafted to help achieve your objectives in a practical timeline.
Items we request you to bring if available:
- business plan
- marketing materials
- your product
In the meeting, an SBDC consultant will discuss their consulting process and philosophy this will help both parties understand how to collaborate effectively. You and the consultant will then discuss your business issues and needs as well as potential resources and tools you can implement. Your consultant will then develop a follow-up plan to be discussed in the following appointment.
Your next appointment
In your second appointment, our consultant will begin working on the scope of work outlined in the initial session. Following that, they will work with you to set milestones, analyze applicable strategies or options available to you, and create action items to further goal progress. As the scope of work varies from client to client, this step widely varies for each client. Finally, at the end of your consulting session, you will be assigned follow-up items and subsequent steps.
